the low down

Hi. I’m Kieron.

I’m not entirely sure why I do what I do. I think that’s a good thing. If I understood it, perhaps it would remove whatever it is I like about it.

I want to be able to combine the past and the present which might be the reason why I am unable to give myself wholly to either film or digital photography. I like to think I can appreciate the aspects of both. I am a sucker for the nostalgic and suspect a lot of what I capture has been inspired by that.

The film projects are an attempt to blend older techniques with modern day. I shoot the 35mm film and then develop it at home using a dark bag and a small development tank. My choosen method is to use a caffenol solution to save on chemicals. Once dry, I scan the negatives to a digital file. It seems to be working well so far! Sometimes there’s a bit of touch up done post development, but not always!

Whether digital or film, I never really bought into the idea of a ‘good picture’. I accept that some images are technically better than others but as with lots of things, what seems ‘good’ is totally subjective. That’s probably my favourite thing about all of this. I see something or have an idea that appeals to me and I think I can capture it. Sometimes it doesn’t work out but when it does, it feels pretty good.
