I wanted to talk a little more about the photography magazine idea and this seemed to be a good place for it. there are a few things that you should know; I’ve never put together a magazine before so there a chance the layout could be garbage. the other things is, I’m not sure there will be any financial gain for you as the artist. in some scenario, perhaps it is a possibility.
this is where i talk and quite possibly ramble about the idea so, i do apologise if you have to try and pick out the useful information.
I’d like it to be free for contributing artists and printing isn’t so much an issue, it’s the postage. there’s a company that another photographer told me about called ‘Mixam’ and i can get up to 50 copies sent to me here for £31 – i could pay that bit, i think. it’s distributing copies to the artists and to anyone who wants one.
Ideally, I’d like it to be available to everyone in a pay what you want / donation way, but I’m not sure how other artists feel about that.
It’s tricky when you bring money into it. like if someone wanted to donate, what would happen with that money. could we use it to recoup the expenses of the print, or put it towards another issue? what happens if the number of donations exceeds the printing cost? could look at splitting any additional money between contributing artists in fair way?
I guess what I’m proposing just now is some sort of pilot in which i can’t say there will be anything in it for you other than a magazine with your work in it and perhaps some exposure should other pick up a copy.
i was looking at something A5 in size, on recycled silk paper and a total of 12 pages (including front and back cover) – we could look at increasing that if necessary, it it costs a little bit more to bump that up to 16 pages.
i didn’t have a theme in mind, I’m not sure if that helps or not. perhaps it could be an eclectic mix.
if anyone might be interested, please get in touch and we can have a chat, share some ideas and see where it takes us. this has been on my mind for a little while now and it hasn’t gone away so it seemed worth investigating.
thanks for reading!
